TechSEO Fest did something different this year. They took six SEO tools and ran them against the same five websites live on stage. No sponsored recommendations, just raw comparisons.
If you've burned money on tools that promised insights but delivered confusion, this was refreshing.
What Worked Well:
- Ahrefs still dominates for backlink analysis. Their index is massive and updates frequently.
- Screaming Frog caught technical issues the expensive platforms missed. Costs like $200 yearly versus $200 monthly.
- Google Search Console is free and shows actual performance data, not estimates.
- Surfer SEO helped match content to top-ranking pages without guesswork.
The Problems:
- Semrush keyword volumes were off by 40-60% compared to actual GSC data. Use for ideas, not decisions.
- Most rank trackers showed different positions because they pull from different locations.
- AI content tools all suggested nearly identical outlines. No competitive advantage there.
- Monthly costs add up fast. Three tools easily hit $400-500 monthly.
The consensus? Start with Search Console and Screaming Frog. Add Ahrefs when you have budget and need serious competitor research. Everything else is optional until you're seeing real traffic.
One speaker made a good point though: tools show data, but understanding what to do with it requires experience. No tool fixes strategy problems.
